US Navy Ships with Mooring Masts

As zeppelin history, the US Navy had two oilers (tankers) equipped with mooring mast to permit the replenishment of the dirigibles MACON, AKRON, SHENANDOAH & LOS ANGELES at sea to extend their search range. The concept was that as the dirigible approached the oiler, the oiler would swing around and steam astern. The airship would then approach over the bow of the oiler and line up over the ship's hull; then when positioned the airship would send down hoses for fuel and water and food.
